The Great Disconnect in Today’s Job Market
Mismatches are frustrating but you can do your part to humanize the process
In North America, we are experiencing an unusual job market. You may have heard that:
- We are in a “candidate market” with more jobs than candidates which give more power to job seekers to pick the best job possible
- Millions of people are resigning their corporate jobs as part of the Great Resignation or the Great Reshuffle to seek greener pastures or become self employed
- There’s a big skills gap and companies are having a hard time finding candidates that possess the right skills
While there is truth to each of these statements, in the corporate world both employers and candidates are experiencing a strong disconnect. Someone who has been unemployed for over six months would say, nobody wants to hire me because of my career gap. On the other hand, a recruiter might say, I get too many resumes that don’t align with any job requirement.
This article states, Some countries are full of educated people whose skills are badly needed. But there are barriers to matching them to jobs, leading to ‘brain waste’.
So… it’s not that easy! Mismatches exist between the jobs available and the jobs that candidates…
