Preparation is extremely important!

Thank you for these tips, especially the salary expetations which can be tricky to answer.

To the Research steps I'd add doing a thorough research about the company and the department/field you're applying to. A lot of reliable and recent information can be found online. Start with the company website and also check Google News, Newswire, BNN, etc. If you know someone working there, much better! Ask them for an informational interview, or if there's no time, ask for some pointers by email to help you prepare.

Believe it or not, many applicants go to an interview without even knowing the basics about the company's services & products. As a candidate, you want to be able to answer two key questions: (1) What do you know about us? (2) Why do you want to work here? If you want to impress the hiring manager, you need to understand the company.

Cheers!
