How to Demonstrate Leadership Skills in a Non-Managerial Role
Tip: Think Outside Your Self-Imposed Box
In one of my previous jobs, I met an administrative assistant. She was a bright, vivacious, and well-educated young woman who performed her day-to-day tasks with diligence and care.
One day, I sat down with her to explain our company’s main projects. My idea was to give her information so that she could become a project coordinator or take a bigger role at the company (or other companies) in the future. She was so agreeable and bright that I saw potential in her.
However, she seemed hesitant to go into a higher role. She would say things like, “well, I’m just an assistant and don’t have any certifications” or “I don’t have the level or authority to suggest anything here.”
I thought she was putting herself in a small ‘self-imposed box’ by relying on these limiting beliefs. She needed to be aware that today’s workplace has evolved beyond organizational charts, job titles, and narrow job descriptions.
