5 Reasons To Interview While Still Employed

Future-proof your career by accepting job interviews when you don’t need them

Every day, I speak with people who have been laid off from companies of all sizes and industries in Canada and the US.

The time it takes them to recover emotionally and find another job can range anywhere from three to eight months. Some take longer. There’s nothing wrong with taking time to find the right opportunity, but it can be a daunting process.

These are the top three things I hear from people who are suddenly laid off:

  • I haven’t looked for a job in 10+years (or 20, 25, 30…)
  • I stayed in the same company for so long because of the people
  • I don’t know how to use LinkedIn

Nowadays, anything can happen and we all need to be prepared for the worst. As of May 2022, we’re hearing about a recession coming in the second half of the year. We’re already hearing about multiple layoffs at tech companies.

My career philosophy is to keep my resume updated, be active on LinkedIn, and pay attention to job vacancies as much as possible. If I’m contacted for opportunities, I take a look and accept to have an initial call. If I get to interview with hiring managers, I…
